The Indonesian search and rescue agency initiated an operation after losing contact with the Virgo Transport 8 ferry. The vessel departed Surabaya on Saturday and was en route to Banjarmasin. Contact was lost around 02:00 local time on Sunday, when the ship was approximately 150 km (93 miles) south of Banjarmasin. The initial distress call was received at 04:10 from the vessel's operator, PT Virgo.

A joint task force comprising the search and rescue agency, navy, maritime police, and other parties has been assembled for the rescue effort. Ships and a helicopter have been deployed, with 280 personnel participating in the operation. All vessels in the Java Sea area have been alerted to report any signs of passengers. An operations post for managing the accident was established at Trisakti Port on Sunday morning.

Relatives of those on board gathered at ports, seeking information about their loved ones. One family shared a WhatsApp status update from a relative on the ferry, which read: "The waves are really frightening tonight. Or is this just what it's normally like travelling by ship, rocking and crashing against the waves?" Among the rescued, a freight driver's wife broke down in tears upon learning her husband had survived.
